Valuable Information About Non Lethal Conflict Resolution Methods

By Marissa Velazquez

Conflict resolution is the process of working out a settlement to resolve a disagreement. This process can work in two ways; peaceful resolution or non peaceful resolution. Either of these methods can be used depending on type of conflict, its nature, and extent and understanding level of the disputing parties. This article discusses the peaceful ways otherwise known as non lethal conflict resolution methods of settling an issue.

When peaceful methods are used, it means that both parties are ready to get rid of the facts causing disagreement peacefully and amicably. There are several peaceful methods of resolving disputes that can be used. One of them is negotiation. This is a dialogue between two disputing parties where they try to solve their dispute themselves. It is a calm method and the parties agree to see each other face to face in order to solve an issue.

The other method is mediation. This method requires that a third party referred to as a mediator be present to help solve the conflict. What the mediator does is that he takes time to listen to each side of the story from the disputing individuals. After which he comes up with an intervention measure that will help the people disputing to come to a compromise, reconciliation or a settlement.

The other way of peacefully solving a disagreement is litigation. This method involves one party taking another to a court of law to have their problem solved by a judge. Both parties can decide to represent themselves or hire an attorney for legal guidance. The judge listens to the case carefully and then in the end makes a decision that both individuals have to abide to.

Arbitration is the other way to resolve a dispute calmly. Just like mediation, this method does involve a third party known as an arbitrator who should be neutral and help the parties solve their dispute. The disputing individuals both agree on a common arbitrator whom they are both aware is neutral. An informal court is established by the arbitrator who then listens to both sides and decides on a settlement that will be agreed by both the disputing individuals.

Religious action is also a method used to solve problems among people peacefully. This is especially for people who practice the same religion. A religious leader is therefore called upon to listen to the issues of both parties and in the most neutral way basing his facts to what the religion would want both parties to do, decide on the most amicable solution for the individuals.

Lastly, there is a method known as problem solving workshops that helps people come to amicable solutions without violence. Conflicting individuals therefore attend a workshop that will help them solve their problem. These workshops have facilitators and both individuals involved in the dispute will be required to participate in the discussion and with the help of facilitators work out a resolution for the problem.

From the above information, people learn of the various non lethal conflict resolution methods of settling disputes. But all these methods are only applicable when settling social disagreements between two people. There are however other non violent ways to solve political disagreements between states such as arms inspection, international agreements among other ways.
