All About Non Lethal Conflict Resolution

By Helene Norris

Communities abound in all areas of the world. Some are located in cities but others are in more remote areas. These areas can support a wide variety of wildlife. Living in such proximity to these animals can seem idyllic at first but problems may develop later on. Non lethal conflict resolution methods can be used to deal with these problems.

It is important that a community be prepared to deal with the presence of wildlife so that if an incident does occur, there will be no loss of human life. If no measures are taken, there could also be a lot of damage to structures, livestock and other properties. Though one can kill the animal in response, there are more human ways to deal with the issue.

Because of the risks that these animals present, communities that are in these areas have to be prepared. One can easily find books about how to deal with the animal involved. An animal organization may be able provide you with informational materials. You can also join seminars and take part in training courses to learn more.

Before anything else, one must assess if the animal really needs to be dealt with. Not all of the wildlife pose a threat to your health or your safety. If there was an encounter in the past, think about how it happened. Evaluate what the animal does and how this has affected your life. If there is indeed a threat, then you will have to come up with strategies for dealing.

The formulation of an approach depends on what animal you are dealing with. Each animal has its own habits and routines. Therefore, your approach for a bear will be highly different from wolves. One will have to consider how many of these animals are present, if they seem to be reproducing, and so on.

There are many methods that do not involve killing. You can use a repellent for example or your could simply put up a fence. If an action of the community is the cause of the unwanted behavior, then consider changing such a practice. You can install structures in the area or the house so that the animal would be unable to enter.

If you think that there is a possibility that something could happen, then do not wait for an attack to occur. You could start taking precautions and installing various preventive or protective structures around your property. By doing things in advance, encounters could lessen and the damage may not be as severe.

Not all people will have the time or the skills needed to handle this serious situations. Fortunately, there are wildlife professionals that can be called on to help with such problems. Such a service may help remove an animal, cover up holes where these animals can enter, and so on. Consultation and assistance will be provided for a fee.

To control animal population, hunting and trapping are some of the more familiar methods of controlling animals. Another approach would be using a non lethal conflict resolution. This will not involve killing animals. It can mean using a product, installing barriers, modifying behaviors and so on.
